It’s a 21-Gun Salute for Plymouth’s Long-Serving Manager Amanda Tucker

When and how did it all begin?

“I was the youngest of 11 children and came out of school with no formal qualifications. I’ve always worked and I started off on the check-out at the Co-Op where I worked my way up to become a Manager, a position I held for 15-years. I wanted to try something different, saw an advert for an Assistant Manager’s job at an arcade which was then called Showboat and is now part of the Cashino brand, thought I would give it a go, went for the interview and here I still am!

What were your first impressions?

“I have to admit that I didn’t have a clue about the gaming industry and as such it represented a real challenge. I’d been in place for six months when the manager left and I was asked by Steve Ambrose who was then my area manager to look after the venue until a replacement was appointed. I wasn’t going to apply but after discussing it with my husband I thought why not – I’d been looking after the venue for a while anyway and had enjoyed it. I very nervously went for the interview and two-hours later I was appointed Manager!. I was over the moon and so excited”

How did you deal with the challenge?

“I knew that I had to prove myself and get the venue back up to a high standard. Shortly afterwards I attended a company Focus meeting where awards were being given out for the best venue, which I received for the South Region. I was so proud to win it and I’ve still got the award in my office. The way I looked on it, it showed that I was doing something right!”

How do you reflect on the last 21-years?

“Even though I’ve been in the industry for more than two decades I’m still learning new things and I have to say I honestly still love my job. I’ve got a great team. We’ve been together for many years and we are like a little family and I know I would not be where I am today without their back-up and support. Having the right team is key to maintaining standards.”

And as for the future?

“I’ve looked after a couple venues and it’s good to pick-up on the little touches and attention to detail that can make a big difference. I’m looking forward to the future and want to challenge myself at a new venue which hopefully will be very soon!”
