MERKUR UK’s Investment in People Sends a Powerful Message

Blueprint’s Operations Manager Samantha Hempshall was among the first wave of students to graduate from MERKUR UK’s ground-breaking Slots Academy. She reflects on the 45-week course and explains why being in an environment that nurtures learning, reflection and progression is a key motivator for people pursuing a career in the industry.

What are your reflections on the course, what skills have you developed and how you are applying them to your work?

SH: I think the course provided a rare opportunity for deep reflection, specifically on my approach to decision-making and leadership. One key learning was the importance of pausing and reflecting before acting, especially when faced with complex choices. I’ve become more intentional in looking beyond surface-level assumptions to understand the root causes behind data or challenges and I’ve I also learned to listen more and talk less! These insights have influenced how I approach problem-solving and leadership in my day-to-day role.

Is there any specific area that you have improved on?

SH: Definitely. I’ve become much more confident when presenting, particularly to senior leadership, but more than that, I now feel empowered to raise ideas, voice considerations, and constructively challenge decisions.

How difficult was it to combine the Academy course with your work?

SH: It was certainly a challenge at times, particularly during peak work periods and in the run-up to exhibitions. Balancing both required careful time management, however, the support from the slots academy group and our leadership team made a big difference and helped make the commitment achievable. The course was demanding, but ultimately very rewarding.

Did you establish camaraderie amongst the intake?

SH: From day one, everyone was naturally a bit reserved and tended to stick to familiar groups, but over time, those boundaries disappeared. By the end of the course, we had formed real friendships built on trust, openness, and mutual support. We now have the kind of relationships that allow us to have honest, inspiring, and at times challenging conversations, which is invaluable.

Has the course build helped inter-company collaboration?

SH: It fostered a stronger network across teams and companies, encouraging mentorship and the sharing of ideas. I’ve personally seen an increase in collaboration, particularly in joint projects and open discussions with colleagues I might not have otherwise worked with.

What was the most challenging aspect of the Slots Academy course?

SH: The course asked us to truly reflect on ourselves, our habits, assumptions, and leadership styles. That level of self-reflection and personal challenge wasn’t always easy, but it was necessary for growth. It pushed me outside of my comfort zone, and I’m grateful for that.

Do you think the commitment shown by MERKUR UK to personal and professional development is an important consideration for people planning their career?

SH: Absolutely. MERKUR UK’s investment in development, both personal and professional, sends a powerful message. It shows that the company values its people and is willing to support long-term growth. For anyone planning their career, knowing that you’re in an environment that nurtures learning, reflection, and progression is incredibly important.
